An Shun Fish Soup - Now at Blk 206 Toa Payoh North
I love fish soup, so much so that I can probably have it for ever meal. And in Singapore, we are faced with almost every hawker centre having at least one stall, so we are sometimes so spoilt for choice that we can't decide.
Fish soup can come with just the broth plus rice, or the soup with either yellow noodles or kway tiao, or what we termed the 'white flat noodles' in Singapore. Some hawkers add in evaporated milk to make the soup tastier, but this might not be tolerable for people who are lactose intolerant.
An Shun Fish Soup, which was previously at Zion Road but moved to Blk 206, Toa Payoh North, which is just a few steps away from Braddell MRT, has always seen long queues during lunch time.
I ordered two bowls - a bowl of soup with fresh fish slices, plus a plate of fried fish, which is their signature dish, I reckon because almost every diner here had one on their table.
Verdict: The soup is clear but flavourful, but I found that by and by, the auntie and uncle has reduced their ingredients and now for every bowl of $4.50 or $5, depending on what you ordered, there are only about maximium 4 pieces of fish, and all thin slices. The nearby fish stalls at Toa Payoh Lorong 1 market has better ingredients and plumper fish, in my opinion.
I love the fried fish though, as it has been fried nicely and evenly, but without leaving one with the guilty feeling of eating fried, fatty food after consuming it.
The auntie used to mess up the orders previously, so nowadays, the patrons just queue up at her stall, and first come, first serve, which I feel, is a fairer system. Definitely avoid lunchtime of between 11.30am to 2pm. If not, you will have to waste an least an hour of your time to queue.
And while you're here, you might want to try the Yong Tau Foo stall just next to it - Hup Chong Hakka Yong Tau Foo. I love the deep fried meat balls and the sweet sauce.
